The Type 98 Sword is a classic Japanese saber that was produced for use by the Japanese army and navy after the end of the samurai era in 1868. Featuring an atmospheric appearance and exquisite accessories, this high-quality, handmade sword has been meticulously recreated to the highest specifications.
Adhering to traditional katana standards and craftsmanship, this top-tier battle-ready sword is also a handcrafted work of art worthy of any collector's attention. All parts of the sword can be disassembled and reassembled like a genuine katana, making it perfect for expert and discerning practitioners.
The blade of this sword is manually folded more than ten times, resulting in thousands of layers of steel. This intricate folding process creates a beautifully regular pattern that can be appreciated with the help of a flashlight. The blade undergoes differentiated quenching, clay tempering, and water quenching, which further enhances the hardness of the edge and produces a stunning hamon (temper line).
Painstakingly hand-ground through more than a dozen processes, the blade showcases the exquisite beauty of the hamon and a three-dimensional, razor-sharp real yokote (notch). This exceptional craftsmanship allows the blade to easily cut through A4 paper and tatami mats.
The sword's fittings are crafted from high-quality Japanese brass, including an exquisite standard Type 98 tsuba (guard) and a hand-polished purple brass habaki (blade collar). The tsuka (handle) is made of hardwood, covered in genuine ray skin and high-quality ito (wrapped cord). A copper button beneath the fuchi (ferrule) must be pressed to withdraw the blade, and the mekugi (peg) can be removed to disassemble the sword.
The saya (scabbard) features a three-layer construction: an iron sheath, a wood core, and a real leather exterior. If the leather case is not needed, the sword can be displayed with just the dark green, frosted iron sheath, which is also highly attractive.
Each sword comes packaged with a silk sword bag and a collection book. Buyers should note that the wooden stand pictured is not included, and the sword should be stored in a non-humid environment, with the blade cleaned and coated with engine oil when not in use.
